High level framework ideas and approaches are what we hear about most in our daily dialogue with the Global 2000. My goal is to update the market on a regular basis about what we are seeing first hand the IT Infrastructure evolve by leveraging the fundamental research TheInfoPro produces on the Storage, Servers, Networking & Information Security sectors. The intelligence we capture spans: technology adoption, vendor preferences, budget data and organizational dynamics.
Here are a few ideas on future blog postings – I’d love to get your thoughts on what is the most relevant to you today and how we can provide more information in a timely manner:
- Management Tools and Platforms – This is one the biggest challenges we see with all phases of the move but especially in Phases I & III. SLAs, Provisioning, Life Cycle Management, the role of Network Services – all come into play here and will be a key battleground for the vendors.
- Vendor Landscape – Cisco, EMC, HP, Oracle, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Juniper, BMC, VMware, Red Hat, Citrix, BMC, CA – the list is long and includes many smaller vendors that have pieces of a solution- how will the vendor landscape pan out? And where might we see more M&A activity?
- When to integrate the workplace vis a vis desktop virtualization / thin client and what will that do to bandwidth requirements to ensure the proper performance
- Organizational dynamics – where is the orchestration coming from? Networking teams are appearing more influential in the Storage decisions and the move to Server Virtualization gives the Server team more clout. Is there an “Office of Virtualization” emerging inside the IT organization? Are Business Unit s going to be driving more of the moves discussed taking the decisions out of the IT organization?
- The Operating System (OS) as we know it today, how will it evolve ? Windows, Unix, Linux roadmaps, VMware as an OS. How much OS kernel is needed in the evolving “Virtual Application” ?
- Security – Access Control, Application Firewalls – the move to the Virtualized platforms and Cloud pose significant security risks
- New technologies & functionality – Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), Solid State Disk (SSD), hybrid platforms of Network & Host devices, WAN Acceleration and many others come to play in the evolution of IT Infrastructure what is the realistic timeframe for their adoption and which vendors will benefit from the moves.
- Budget Outlooks – when will IT Infrastructure spend pick up to help gauge pace of adoption and investments in the phases we have discussed.
