“With that increased risk environment, one would hope enterprises are becoming more strategic in how they deal with the challenges. But that’s sadly not the case, according to this year’s annual Global Information Security Survey, conducted by CSO and CIO magazines in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers. More than 9,600 business and technology executives from around the world took the survey, and 43 percent of them believe their organizations are IT security leaders.
….
“There are two ways to look at that data,” says Daniel Kennedy, research director for information security and networking at the research firm TheInfoPro. “You can be glad they’re confident about their security posture, they must have some reason behind that. I do wonder however, if there is something along the lines of the Dunning-Krueger bias, in which unskilled people make poor decisions but don’t realize their own incompetence.”"

TheInfoPro’s Kennedy says that to get there, the first step is to build credibility.

“If management doesn’t trust the CISO, then they don’t have the right guy. The security leader is someone functioning on the executive level, someone who can speak IT in business terms, and somebody who really effects cultural change in the company,” he says.

“That means there should be a difference between the day they started and a year and a half later in terms of the way the company views security. If they’re not getting that, you don’t have a security leader. What you have is somebody who is sort of just sitting around in the role,” says TheInfoPro’s Kennedy.

“Our research shows almost half of storage professionals are using server virtualization as an opportunity to transform server backup.” said Marco Coulter, research director at TheInfoPro (a division of The 451 Group), “The hypervisor-aware technology in CA ARCserve r16 avoids expensive array replication and simplifies the P2V transition by centralizing control of replication and backup in one management interface.”

“It’s not budgets, technology issues or strategic worries that are creating roadblocks for cloud projects in many enterprises. Instead, deep-seated fears of change and requirements for more cloud education are keeping many enterprises from moving forward.

That’s the conclusion of a new cloud computing study from TheInfoPro, a division of The 451 Group, which found that 52 percent of 109 medium to large enterprise respondents believed that changes are needed in these attitudes for their cloud plans to achieve real success.

“That has been a key roadblock for an awfully long time for a lot of initiatives,” says Sean Hackett, an analyst for TheInfoPro and the author of the study. “It’s where ERP was 10 years ago. It’s always been a core inhibitor of IT projects. Changing the ways that people do things all day is not easy to do.”"

“Daniel Kennedy, the Research Director for Information Security & Networking at TheInfoPro, noted that it was clear AT&T’s event management and log practices allowed them to launch a thorough investigation.

“AT&T investigators were able to identify that an IP address from their network accessed FileApe.com, which server that IP was associated with, and who was connected to it at the time of the file upload,” Kennedy said.

“While the incompetency of the insider bad actor in this case is fairly common, the ability to make so compelling a case against him via effective log management practices and a strong forensic capability is both rare and impressive.”

Kennedy added that while event log management solutions have penetrated some 70-percent of enterprises, with 17-percent stating that putting something in place is in their plans, the more detail oriented Security Information Event Management (SIEM) solutions have not fared as well. Only 50-percent of enterprises interviewed acknowledge having them in use today.”

“A survey of cloud decision makers at large enterprises in North America found that 52 percent of those polled said that internal change and learning was the leading roadblock to cloud project success, pointing to possible pent-up demand for advisory services, as users struggle with the change brought on by the cloud.

According to the study, conducted by TheInfo Pro, a division of the 451 Group, other project roadblocks included upfront cost (15 percent) and security (13 percent). Cost reduction (68 percent) is the leading justification for implementing cloud services, followed by increased flexibility/scalability (24 percent) and reduced complexity (21 percent), also key drivers toward the cloud.”
